No matter how carefully you follow mosquito safety and outdoor entertaining tips for keeping bug bites away, most St. Louisians always end up with a mosquito bite or two by the end of summer. Luckily you can get some relief by following our Mosquito Squad staff picks for home remedies that are ultra helpful in alleviating some of the itchy sensations that follow pesky bites.
The Aloe Vera plant is a natural antiseptic that helps to reduce itching and swelling from bug bites. It’s also a great treatment for sunburn, perfect for use after long days in the summer sun.
You can buy soothing Aloe Vera gels or even keep an Aloe Vera plant in your home. Easy to care for, you simply peel away the tough outer skin of the plant to find the soft gel inside the plant to be used for treating mosquito bites.
You can even chill the gel for a cool and easy-to-apply cure.
Put your collection of essential oils to use as a temporary relief from your bug bites. Try using lavender, tea tree, rosemary or a combination of oils to create your own blend for bite relief. Mosquito Squad staff swears by mixing small amounts of oils in a small spray bottle to gently apply on any affected skin areas.
If you run out of Aloe Vera or oil blends, you can always use ice to reduce any skin inflammation you might have after a mosquito bite. Simply hold an ice pack or cooling cloth around the affected skin area for a soothing remedy that’s easy to create even while camping or at outdoor events (as long as you have access to ice!).
